It’s About Timing
Inadvertently, we created a stir on the topic of timing with our last post. And so we wanted to clarify our thoughts on calendar timing for Los Angeles Fashion Week.
We’ve LONG advocated an earlier time slot on the global fashion calendar for BOTH LA Fashion Week AND LA Market Week. We do like to see these events, for both the promotional and wholesale sides of the business, to overlap schedules. Timed simultaneously, these events and venues can work hand-in-hand to create an ultimate fashion festival that provides a full array of experiences and opportunities to connect with buyers, merchandisers, stylists, bloggers, editors and journalists. And the public. We do understand the politics and fine points of organizing a strategic shift in dates for the entire market, and we expect a cohesive change of calendar would take several seasons to accomplish.
We DO NOT support the notion of LA Fashion Week occurring simultaneously or competing on the calendar with NY Fashion Week or other key international Fashion Weeks. Adam Tschorn at the Los Angeles Times clarified for us his point in the LA Fashion Week: Fantasy Edition article is to amplify LA’s largest existing fashion festivals, The Oscars and the The Emmys, with a Fashion Week events layered on in the weeks preceding the telecasts. He notes that at the time the article was written, NY Fashion Week was already slotted in that week before the Oscars, but wouldn’t advocate simultaneous Fashion Week events in LA and NY.
The organizers behind Fashion Los Angeles are making a bold move, without the customary politics, to make a case for timing its production in early February, preceding New York Fashion Week. We don’t expect the entire market to follow, but we look forward to seeing the mavericks.
A few key dates: February 2011
1-7 Fashion Los Angeles
10-17 New York Fashion Week (Followed by London & Milan & Paris)
17-20 MAGIC Marketplace Las Vegas
27 Oscar telecast
Meantime, we’ll see you this October 13-20 for Los Angeles Fashion Week Spring 2011 collections with events beginning October 11 and running through October 25. Details to be announced.
