Several producers will organize collective venues for the presentation of collections at several locations across Los Angeles from March 12 to March 23 to complement Market Week in the showrooms and trade shows in downtown Los Angeles. In addition to the collective event venues, we expect to see several designers show independently in environments that reflect most closely their vision for the collection this season. The calendar will be updated starting in February. Highlights:

Registration for events will be handled separately by each venue producer or individual designer event. While our test of a collective registration process has concluded, Fashion Week LA remains the most comprehensive calendar of events.  Our principal, Jennifer Üner, is proud to have been selected to participate on the planning committee of urban developer AECOM for LA Fashion District’s “Design for Development” spearheaded by the CRA/LA (Community Redevelopment Agency for the City of Los Angeles). March 13-19, 2011 The Gallery LA Fashion Week at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood

At the front of the international fashion calendar–preceding New York Fashion Week–Fashion Los Angeles has announced a new platform for savvy designers and brands taking place February 1-7, 2011. We admire the vision of this consortium and look forward to seeing what transpires in the proposed fashion village designed by Marmol Radziner that will alight on a rooftop parking lot venue opposite the Walt Disney Concert Hall. This early timeslot on the calendar will give fashion designers the opportunity to build media assets, storylines and relationships that will aid their presentations at fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan, Paris or around the world.

The tail end of the international fashion calendar is LA’s usual spot–following Paris Fashion Week–and producers of LA Fashion Weekend at Sunset Gower Studios plan to expand the concept to a full week this coming season. Retaining LA’s customary calendar position and concurrent with LA’s Market Week March 14-17  (when business happens in the wholesale showrooms and trade shows of the California Market Center, New Mart, Cooper Design Space and other venues in the LA Fashion District) these organizers make a bold bid to dominate the schedule. Mikey Koffman is the colorful producer of this event, and you may recognize her from her pursuits in the reality TV series “The Real L Word.” The TV theme runs deeper still with a supporting media partner in local broadcaster KTLA 5.

Leading independent productions–Simply Stylist, Project Ethos and Concept Fashion Week among them–will tailor offerings to the needs of their own audiences and are expected to announce programs shortly. We’ll continue to update LA’s comprehensive fashion week calendar here,  and post the schedule as available beginning in January.

Unperturbed this season was LA’s can-do spirit, best exemplified by designers Ahn Volcek of L’une Collection, Daisy Gonzalez and Paulina Lopez who found new fashion friends rushing to their aid after World Coast Management canceled its LA Fashion Week event just 48 hours to show time.  Organizers of the blogging community Two Point Oh! LA and producers at Fashion Los Angeles jumped in to provide an alternative solution in a lofty downtown space, just days later. This same team will host a pop-up “Meet The Public” shopping gallery next month and series of fashion presentations February 1-7.

For this writer, who has spent at least a decade working on collective platforms and promotions for the fashion industry in LA, it was a mini reunion of sorts with some true industry professionals that proved to be the most fun and inspiring. We didn’t just look back, we looked forward. We agreed that with the economy now (somewhat) stabilized, the doors are opening to new opportunities. With the right mix of money, management, endorsements and timing we’re certain that more globally relevant Los Angeles fashion events can happen.

LA is home to the largest fashion district in the country. Organizing and fine-tuning its capabilities, promoting its resources and facilitating industry connections to boost business in the region should be a priority for the LA fashion industry’s accomplished entrepreneurs.
